Artistic strategies against censorship

The panel discussion will debate about the strategies artists/curators/institutions can develop against censorship, from the point of view of a specific experience, artistic research and curatorial vision. As the independent international organisation advocating for and defending freedom of artistic expression, Freemuse states “at the heart of violations of artistic freedom is the effort to silence opposing or less preferred views and values by those in power – politically, religiously or societally – mostly due to fear of their transformative effect. The talk will focus in particular on the Pakistani and Iranian contexts at the center of the work by Naiza Khan and Shadi Harouni; and on the activity of Ukrainian art center Izolyatsia.

Speakers: Naiza Khan (artist), Kateryna Filyuk (curator and art critic, chief curator at Izolyatsia, Platform for Cultural Initiatives, Kyiv), Shadi Harouni (artist, assistant professor and Head of Undergraduate Studio Arts at New York University, Steinhardt)

Language: English
