The Historical Carnival of Ivrea is one of the most famous Italian events, dating back to the Middle Ages. The pageant of historical figures re-enacts a local legend, according to which Violetta, a miller’s daughter, killed the baron who wanted to claim the ius primae noctis, thus triggering a revolt in the city. The famous Battle of the Oranges held each year recreates the uprising of the people against the feudal lord.
