Matteo Viglietta Award, coordinated by Collezione La Gaia and now at its fifth edition, was created in 2022 to commemorate Matteo Viglietta: an outstanding and passionate collector who had a very strong bond with Artissima from the outset, actively supporting the fair with acquisitions for his own collection and the production of collateral events.The exhibition space of Collezione La Gaia in Busca (founded with his partner Bruna Girodengo at the end of the 1970s) has always been one of the most visited locations. The fund is supported by the Collection itself, currently managed by the Viglietta family, and celebrates Matteo Viglietta’s joyful and curious spirit. He was always interested in the discovery and rediscovery of radical practices, at times not rewarded with the levels of recognition they deserved from audiences and the market. In line with this approach, the prize is open to artists of all ages. The acquisition continues an established practice of Viglietta, who every year would select a work with some connection to the materials and tools sold by his company – Viglietta Matteo SpA, a leader in the import and wholesale distribution of hardware. The work purchased at Artissima, besides becoming part of Collezione La Gaia, may be used as the cover of the “catalog-price list” and, in this sense, will have a connection with one of the hundreds of products or materials it contains, while paying homage to Matteo Viglietta’s ironic and irreverent spirit – that of a man with an open mind and a contagious smile.
