For centuries, humans have been fascinated by whales, and since ancient times, myths and legends, beliefs and tales have emerged that highlight their symbolic and ambivalent nature: on the one hand, monstrous beings capable of swallowing ships and bringing destruction; on the other, benevolent creatures, queens of the ocean. The exhibition Moby Dick – The Whale, co-curated with TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, takes its cue from the American masterpiece and explores its many historical and symbolic interpretations: from the struggle between man and Nature to the conflict between good and evil, from feelings of passion and revenge to themes of journey and discovery. Large video installations, sculptures, telescopes, canvases, photographs, and engravings explore the major themes of this extraordinary work through a surprising and multifaceted journey across historical periods, perspectives, and adaptations, where visual art is enriched by music, cinema, science, and biology through the lens of literature. The exhibition overturns the novel’s ending, inviting the audience to dive into the depths and see the world from the perspective of the white whale.
