IRIS TOULIATOU

As the recipient of the 2025 edition of the Pista 500 Prize, for the new season of Pista 500, Pinacoteca agnelli presents a new site-specific commission by Iris Touliatou (1981, Athens, where she lives and works) on La Pista 500.

Iris Touliatou’s practice explores and questions the limits of the spatial, financial, administrative structures that govern the institutions that invite her to create, produce, and present her work, whether they are museums, galleries, or biennials. Her interventions are “economic” in two ways: they question the very meaning of this term, recalling its Greek etymology. The original term, oikonomia, was used to define household management, the administration and distribution of the family’s resources, people, and things. Touliatou is not tied to a single artistic medium, rather she allows the set of conditions that characterize the venue to suggest the most appropriate form of intervention.

Invited by Pinacoteca Agnelli to create a new image for the billboard on La Pista 500 – the former testing track of FIAT automobiles on Lingotto rooftop, where Piancoteca Agnelli is located – Tuliatou has taken this opportunity to develop a project extending past the physical perimeter of the image, functioning on multiple intertwined levels at once. By treating the institution’s given conditions and architecture as a medium rather than a methodology, the piece disrupts the boundary between content’s production and its dissemination.
