NO FUTURE

The collaboration between Intesa Sanpaolo and Artissima continues with the fifth edition of the artist film and video exhibition, hosted in the spaces of Gallerie d’Italia – Torino. The exhibition is titled NO FUTURE and is curated by Alice Motard. No Future adopts a subjective and unapologetic stance to explore the idea that it has become difficult, if not impossible, for us to imagine a shared and desirable future.

The exhibition brings together films and videos by artists created between 2000 and 2026. Together, they explore a hypothesis: over the course of more than half a century, the meaning of the famous 1970s punk slogan has evolved from an individual rejection of society into a collective sense of doom. The promise of progress embodied by industry, technology and narratives of modernity appears to have run its course. Driven as much by their soundtracks as by their images, the works follow, respond to and clash with one another, inviting viewers to navigate between different eras and gauge the transformations of the contemporary world. The display opens with a humorous glimpse into the materialist culture of the 1980s and the rise of the globalised economy.

Proceeding through democratic crises, international conflicts and the growing entanglement of new technologies (social media, virtual reality, artificial intelligence) and politics, it eventually addresses the accelerating ecological crisis and the disarray it provokes. It ends abruptly with a door slamming shut, seemingly shutting out any notion of future or hope.

In sum, No Future poses a simple question: What if our future is history?
