Davide Sgambaro. FENOMENO

Artissima expands its collaboration with C2C Festival, focusing on a special project for the festival and the gallery FuoriCampo whose protagonist is Davide Sgambaro, with the installation FENOMENO (Red Smiley), shown inside the main venue of the festival, in which an icon of global visual culture becomes a device of reflection on the codes of contemporary communication. The smiley face, an archetypal symbol with an ambiguous and mutable meaning, is transformed by FENOMENO into a hypnotic and alienating mask, an expression of forced positivity. The installation investigates the “niceness” of late capitalism, the obligation to always appear to be available and cheerful, shifting the smile from an instrument of sharing to a social convention and a form of control.
