Artissima Junior is a co-presented program between Artissima and Turin-based football club Juventus, first created in 2018 and conceived for young visitors to the fair, from 6 to 11 years of age. As part of the program, TOMORROW, PIECE BY PIECE (Domani, pezzo per pezzo) is a project by Francis Offman (Rwanda, 1987) this year’s artist-tutor who will guide the young participants in the production of a choral project through a direct, engaging experience with contemporary art. Offman, represented by the gallery P420 (Bologna), will involve the young visitors in a creative reflection about the faith we place on others and the act of listening: values that form the basis of any team sport, both on the football pitch and in life. The children, divided into interdependent teams, will work on the construction of a single large artwork, utilizing materials used by Offman and which he uses in his painting practice which unpredictably combines coffee grounds, salvaged papers, fabrics, gauze, pigments and other found or received materials. In Offman’s process, every element conserves traces of its origin, its typical purpose and often a personal relationship, transforming the surface of the painting into a space of layering between individual memory and collective history.
For Artissima Junior the artist will provide the children with found materials from the world of Juventus, which become the living matter of the group installation. Found materials in the project will include team uniforms and training gear, tarps and advertising banners, grass clippings and coffee grounds, numbers and letters normally applied to jerseys. These objects introduce forms and memories that have been previously experienced; though the colour and aesthetics of these materials will not serve a decorate purpose but instead directs choices, contrasts and relationships.
The activities are based on collaboration with the Department of Education of GAM, Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino, and the support of Carioca, whose products will be used to colour the activities in the stand.
