An outstanding figure in the history of Italian art, Carol Rama (Turin, 1918–2015) experimented widely throughout the twentieth century with an array of different subjects and materials. In the early 2000s, she began to garner a reputation outside Italy, and her renown increased yet further after 2015, thanks in part to major retrospectives staged in Europe and the United States. In next to no time, she has become an icon of creativity for artists of recent generations.

The event will host the presentation of the book Carol Rama. Catalogo ragionato (Catalogue raisonné), the brainchild of Archivio Carol Rama. Initiated and generously supported by Fondazione Sardi per l’Arte and published in two volumes by Skira editore, the catalogue provides, for the first time, a full overview of seven decades of the artist’s work (1936–2005), encapsulating all of the complexity and uniqueness of her output.

The panel discussing Rama and her work will include Pinuccia Sardi, Chair of the Turin-based Fondazione Sardi per l’Arte;  Michele Carpano, Chair of Archivio Carol Rama; curators Maria Cristina Mundici, Raffaella Roddolo and Maria Grazia Messina; and the art critic and historian Claudio Zambianchi.

The result of a great deal of scholarly research, which was undertaken by Archivio Carol Rama back in 2014, the two full-colour books include critical art-historical essays by leading specialists covering the artist’s oeuvre, a collection of 200 full-page plates, along with illustrated technical descriptions of the works, a biography of the artist, and her complete exhibition history and bibliography.
