The red thread of 2016 was performance: the physical aspect of live events in the performance programme; the discussion among curators and collections, in mobile conversations inside the fair; the theme of the major exhibition on collecting in the territory; the conceptual aspect, in the capacity of Artissima to rethink the role of an art fair.
Dialogue was the new section on stands with a maximum of three artists, whose works generated a relationship in keeping with a coherent project coordinated by the gallery.
“In Mostra”, curated by Simone Menegoi, took the title “corpo.gesto.postura” and introduced works, for the first time in 2016, arriving from major museums and foundations, together with important loans from private collections in the city.
Another new development was the Premio Mutina “This is not a Prize” with a value of 5000€, assigned to one talented artist showing work in the fair.
This was also the year of Flying Home, an original special project of Artissima 2016 in collaboration with Torino Airport | Sagat, which with a site-specific installation by Thomas Bayrle reflected the fair’s ability to insert contemporary art even in unpredictable places. With Flying Home, Thomas Bayrle chose the baggage claim area of the airport, transforming it into an unexpected and stimulating space dense with messages. Through an original sequence of images, the artist revealed the mechanisms of construction of his gigantic work Flugzeug from 1984, an airplane made with a million small planes on a surface of 96 square meters.
